ONE PLANET, ONE PEOPLE

“The United Nations was built by the world, for the world …..the place for countries to unite behind global solutions to global problems: Solutions that ease tensions, build bridges and forge peace. SolThe 5 pillars of sustainability, often associated with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership. These pillars provide a framework for sustainable development by emphasizing social well-being, environmental protection, economic growth, a stable and just society, and collaborative action.

One Planet Living is a global concept with the vision to create a world “where people enjoy  happy, healthy lives within the natural limits of the planet, leaving space for wildlife and wilderness.”

So long I have will and am physically capable,
So long will I teach mankind
To strive for truth, order and peace.
~Zoroastrian Scriptures

He who experiences the unity of life, sees his own self in all beings, and all beings in his own self, and looks on everything with an impartial eye.
~Hindu Faith (Bhagavadgita)

And it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above
the hills and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many peoples shall come and say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways, and that we may walk in His paths…….     He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
~ Isaiah  (Book of Isaiah 2:2-4)

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be known as the children of God.  But I say to you that hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.  To those that strike you on the cheek, offer the other one also, and from those who take away your cloak, do not withhold your coat as well.  And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
~Jesus (Matthew 5:9)

The Prophet Muhammad (pabbuH) taught us that when we are faced with aggression and intolerance, we should respond with peace. “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily [gently], and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.”
~Islam

The most important principle of divine philosophy is the oneness of the world of humanity, the unity of mankind ….. Therefore it is our duty to put forth our greatest efforts and summon all our energies in order that the bonds of unity and accord may be established among mankind…… God has created us all human and all countries of the world are parts of the same globe.  We are all his servants…… All the divine Manifestations have proclaimed the oneness of God and the unity of mankind……  The fundamental truth of the Manifestations is peace. This underlies all religion, all justice. The divine purpose is that men should live in unity, concord and agreement and should love one another.  Consider the virtues of the human world and realize that the oneness of humanity is the primary foundation of them all.
~‘Abdu’l-Baha  (1844-1921)

When the Messiah reveals himself to Israel, at that hour the first word He speaks will be “Peace”.
~The Talmud

Peace and Universal Love is the essence of the gospel preached by all the enlightened ones.  ………..  Forgive do I creatures all, and let all creatures forgive me.  Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity.  Know that violence is the root cause of miseries in the world; violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage.  Do not injure any living being – this is the eternal, perennial and unalterable way of spiritual life.
~Jain prayer

We gently caress you, the earth, our planet and our home.
Our vision has brought us closer to you, making us aware of the harm we have done to the life-network upon which we ourselves depend.
We are reminded that we have poisoned your waters, your lands, your air.  We have filled you with the bones of our dead from war and greed.  Your pain is our pain.
Touching you gently, we pray that we may become peace-bringers and life-bringers so that our home in its journey around the sun may not become a sterile and lonely place.
May this prayer and its power last forever.
~Buddhist prayer

We know that in all creation
Only the human family
Has strayed from the Sacred Way.
We know that we are the ones who are divided
And we are the ones who must come back together
To walk in the Sacred Way.
Great Father,
Sacred One,
Teach us love, compassion and honour,
That we may heal the earth and heal each other.
~Native American Tradition:  Ojibway (Canada)

“We the peoples of the United Nations…” These are not just the opening words of the United Nations Charter – they define who we are. The United Nations is more than an institution. It is a living promise – spanning borders, bridging continents, inspiring generations. For eighty years, we have worked to forge peace, tackle poverty and hunger, advance human rights, and build a more sustainable world – together. As we look ahead, we confront challenges of staggering scale: escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technologies, and threats to the very fabric of our institution. This is no time for timidity or retreat. Now, more than ever, the world must recommit to solving problems no nation can solve alone. On this UN Day, let’s stand together and fulfil the extraordinary promise of your United Nations. Let’s show the world what is possible when “we the peoples” choose to act as one.
