The aim of World Religion Day is to promote interfaith understanding and harmony by emphasizing the common denominators underlying all religions. Mankind, with its single origin, must now strive towards the reconciliation of that which has been split up. Furthermore, in this day and age human unity and true equality depend more on future goals, on what we are becoming and whither we are going. The prime cause of age-old conflict between man and man has been the absence of one ethical belief, a single spiritual standard. World Religion Day observances help to foster a unified approach to the changes that confront humanity, an approach that sees the whole earth as a single country and humanity its citizens.

There is a spirit which was before the heavens and the earth were. It is the one dwelling in silence, beyond earthly forms, Never-changing, omnipresent, inexhaustible. I do not know its name, but if I have to give it a name, I call it Tao, I call it the Supreme. To go to the Supreme is a wandering, a wandering afar, And this wandering is a returning. Man on earth is under the law of the earth. The earth is under the law of heaven. Heaven is under the law of Tao. Tao is under its own law. ~Taoism
The purpose of all major religious traditions is not to construct big temples on the outside, but to create temples of goodness and compassion inside, in our hearts. ~Tenzin Gyatso
